Newcastle winger James McManus has announced his retirement from the NRL, effective immediately.

The 30-year-old hasn't played since round 20 last year when he suffered a heavy concussion from what at first appeared to be an innocuous hit in a match against South Sydney.

"It is obviously a difficult decision but a decision I made for my young family," the 166-game veteran said.
