Like For Like As Hodkinson Linked With Knights

The Newcastle Knights wish list should read only one thing Ė reliable halves. You could be forgiven for thinking thatís what they were looking for after it was reported (by everyone's best mate, The Lurker) that incumbent NSW halfback Trent Hodkinson is on the verge of announcing a four-year deal with the Hunter club, and a big one at that.

When I think of reliable halfbacks Hodkinson is not the first name that springs to mind. Heís certainly no slouch but between injuries and likely Origin selections in the coming years there might not be a lot of value for money in picking up another inconsistent presence.

Combined, the potential Knights trio have already missed 15 matches in 2015 and the season is barely past the halfway mark.

Jarrod Mullen is the main culprit here, with injury setting him back 16 games over the last season and a half.

Since his debut Tyrone Roberts seemed to settle into a rhythm but has slipped into injury this season which has seen him absent for a quarter of the matches so far in 2015.

Reported recruit Hodkinson then, is the most reliable of the three having missed only 3 matches this season but his story lies in the regularity of his time away from the club.

Heís the only player of the three not to have played every match in at least one of the past five seasons and has missed a total of 34 out of potential matches since moving to Canterbury-Bankstown in 2011.

Hodkinsonís talents still make this a justifiable recruitment and if all falls into place the three could end up filling in for each other giving Newcastle 2 top-grade halves for every match. Thatís pretty optimistic, though.

Have Your Say: Do you think Trent Hodkinson would be a good fit at Newcastle?
