This weekend marks the 15th anniversary of the day that Warren Ryan tried to change Rugby League forever.
It was Round 3, March 21, 1999, when Knights coach Warren Ryan named American Greg Smith on the wing to make his NRL debut for the Knights against Canterbury.
You could sum up Smiths debut in one word “shocker”. Missing tackles, dropping balls and basically handing Canterbury the match, Smith never played first grade again and was later released from the Knights after the club found out he had never played NFL Football for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Like the plane that disappeared last week, no one really knows what happened to Greg Smith after that. So for being a one hit wonder, we at The Joust salute you Greg Smith.
And Greg if you are reading this, please drop us a message and let us know what you’re up to.
