Preview Knights v Raiders

  • Preview Knights v Raiders

The first home game of the season is at the unusual time of 6:30 on Sunday night. Normally Id be having my Sunday roast with the family but that will make way for this week for the Knights big clash with the Raiders at Hunter Stadium.

Canberra looked good last weekend up in Townsville but came away with a loss while Newcastle tried hard but were handed a Round 1 lesson by the Panthers. The old saying “A week is a long time in football” so hopefully that is enough time for the boys to turn things around and give Ricky Stuarts team their 2nd loss of the season.

Since the Knights entered the competition in 1988 they have met the Raiders on 39 occasions.  Raiders hold bragging rights with 21 wins. There has been one draw and the Knights have won on 17 occasions. Although it was just a trial match, these two sides went head to head in Tamworth in February with the Knights winning comprehensively by 34 to 10. But as we saw last week, trial form means nothing, and Newcastle will have to play way better to get over the green machine tomorrow.

Jake Mamo could make his debut on Sunday at fullback as Wayne Bennett has not yet confirmed his starting line-up. If Mamo is given the 1 jersey, Gidley will move back to hooker and Waddell to the bench. With these selection changes, it got me thinking, has there ever been a player that has gone from fullback to hooker or visa versa? If you know of anyone that has done it, please share your thoughts and while your at it, give us your tip for the game on Sunday.
