Since they entered the old NSWRL in 1988, the Knights have taken pride in developing their own juniors, but now and then and more recently the club has had to import players from other clubs. So for my top 5 this week I thought I would list my top 5 signings from other clubs.
5). Tony Butterfield – He only played a handful of games with Penrith before signing with the Knights. Butts suffered a few injury setbacks early on in his career with the Knights but eventually became one of the first players selected every week with 229 appearances in the red and blue.
4). Matt Parsons – He came to the club as a Dally M Prop of the year for Souths. Newcastle needed a front rower with punch after losing Paul Harragon and Tony Butterfield to retirement. Parson joined the Knights in 2000 and won a premiership in 2001.
3). Mark Sargent – Sarg joined Newcastle from Canterbury-Bankstown in 1989, returning to his home town and looking for a regular starting spot. He not only achieved that, but became the clubs first test representative and later captained the Knights before retiring in 1995.
2). Michael Hagan – He left a very successful Canterbury Bankstown team to join Newcastle the same year as Sargent. The Knights had a hard forward pack and all they needed was a playmaker. Hagan was the man to guide the club to their first semi final appearance.
1). Ben Kennedy – After a couple of successful seasons with Canberra, BK join the Knights in 2000 and helped the club to their second premiership in 2001.
Well that’s my top 5 player signings from other clubs. There’s obviously a few others I could have had in there but I could only pick 5. Who would you have in your top 5?
