Scully Park will come alive tomorrow when the Newcastle Knights do battle with Canberra Raiders in am important trial game before the premiership season kicks off March 6.
The home of the West Tamworth Lions will be packed to rafters to see these two potential top 8 sides go head to head.
Both coaches have named near full strength starting line-ups with an extended bench. In particular Canberra coach Ricky Stuart has a squad of 28 to choose from.
I expect this match to be all about combinations and also to see what the opposition has got, as the two teams will meet again on March 16. It’s been well documented that the Josh McCrone experiment at hooker will continue and Jack Wighton will start in the halves. While Ricky Stuart has selection problems on where to fit all his troops, Newcastle coach Wayne Bennett needs to find a replacement for injured five-eight Jarrod Mullen. Another headache is Kurt Gidley’s foot. He may play in tomorrow night’s fixture but could risk further damage. Other than that, the Knights forward pack is ready to go with several positions up for grabs.
Although tomorrow night’s game is not for points, the result will hold some value for the winners and for Rugby League fans in Tamworth and surrounding areas. A bumper crowd is expected at Scully Park, which will no doubt see some quality Rugby Football from both teams.
