Broncos buck Knights out Auckland Nines

  • Broncos buck Knights out Auckland Nines

The Newcastle Knights Auckland Nines campaign ended the way it started with a loss at Eden Park this afternoon.

In their quarterfinal match against the Brisbane Broncos, the Queensland team was too strong winning 16 points 11.

The match was in the balance until Knights playmaker Jarrod Mullen fell to the ground with a hamstring injury. It looked as if a sniper in the crowd had shot him. †After that moment, Newcastle lost all rhythm and could not claw back the Broncos lead. †

Although this concept of Rugby Football was new to everyone involved, Iím sure next year will see a lot of changes to the makeup of teams competing. Especially Newcastle, who had maybe one too many players in their squad on the wrong side of 30.

On a brighter note, Knights youngster Jake Mamo played well for the red and blue and could turn out to be a real prospect for the future.

Overall I think the Nines tournament was a success, just a shame the Knights didnít go a bit further in the tournament but to reach the quarters in the inaugural season is a good start.
